When the Titles Change but the Mission Stays the Same

If you’ve ever worked inside an organization long enough, you’ve probably seen it: the never-ending parade of new org charts, new titles, and new “strategic directions.”

That’s exactly what inspired this Cox-Box cartoon — our friend Joe from Maintenance, paintbrush in hand, staring at a door that’s been repainted so many times you can practically hear the wood begging for mercy. Regional Process Advisor. Director of Quality. Deployment Leader of Continuous Improvement. TQM Leader. Black Belt (SS), Black Belt (LSS)…

Joe sums it up perfectly: “One more reorganization and I’ll have to replace the door.”

It’s funny because it’s true.

But behind the joke is a reality many of us live every day: titles change, structures shift, and organizations evolve — sometimes faster than the paint can dry.

Yet one thing needs to remain constant:

Someone has to lead the charge when it comes to Continuous Improvement.

Reorganizations can reset reporting lines, but they shouldn’t reset purpose. CI isn’t something that belongs only to a title — whether that title is Director, Advisor, Leader, Black Belt, or something dreamed up during a late-night strategy session.

CI lives in the behaviours, habits, and conversations that happen every day. And every organization needs someone — often a small team of “someones” — who keeps nudging things forward. Someone who protects the pulse of improvement when everything else feels like it’s being shuffled, renamed, or rebuilt.

I’ve seen teams thrive through reorgs not because the titles were perfect, but because the commitment to improvement was steady. The champions stayed focused. The work continued. The culture held.

So as much as we can laugh at that poor door covered in job titles, the message is simple:

Reorganizations may be inevitable, but losing momentum on Continuous Improvement doesn’t have to be.

If anything, change is when strong CI leadership is needed most.

Let me know what titles you’ve had through your CI journey — or how many times your door could’ve used a fresh coat of paint.
